OBA OF BENIN RE-ECHOED FOREFATHERS’ REQUEST ON ARTEFACTS…
His Royal Majesty, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare 11, Oba of Benin has re-echoed his forebears appeal on the return of two major artefacts amongst others carted away in the February 1897 Benin expedition.
The Benin Monarch made this assertion when he received two delegations led by the Director, Ethnological Museum in Berlin, Germany, and the Swiss-Benin initiatives who paid him a courtesy visit in his Palace in Benin City, Edo State capital.
The Omo ‘N Oba N’ Edo used the occasion to state a record of ownership of the Benin work of arts and the subsequent Presidential directive that the two recently returned artefacts from Aberdeen and Scotland be returned to their original place of abode which is the Palace of the Oba of Benin.
The Benin Monarch therefore called for restitution on the artefacts and the support in building of a world class museum that will accommodate all the repatriated artefacts to be sited within the ambit of Palace and to be known as the Benin Royal Museum.
His Royal Majesty’s further informed the visiting delegations that his immediate younger brother Prince Aghatise Erediauwa will lead the Palace delegations to the planned September 2022 Benin Cultural exhibitions in Berlin, Germany and other dialogues on the return of artefacts.
Ewuare II appreciated President Mohammed Buhari on his enormous support in the reparation of the Benin artefacts. While in the same vien the revered Oba of Benin appreciated the Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the DG of National Commission for Museum and Monuments, as well as, all well meaning Nigerians for their efforts so far in the reparation of the Benin artefacts.
Earlier, the Director Ethnological Museum in Berlin, Germany Professor Dr. Lars-Christain Koch informed the Benin throne that they were in Benin City, Edo State to ascertain the ownership and appropriate key steps to restitution for the yet to be returned artefacts.
Professor Dr. Lars-Christain Koch informs the Palace that there will be an exhibition of the rich culture of Benin through the objects from Benin as part of the responsibility of their museum which will take place in September 2022 in Berlin, Germany.
Also, the leader of the Swiss-Benin initiatives delegation, Dr. Michael’s Ober Hofer informed the Palace that they were in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria for more research and dialogue into Benin artefacts.
Dr. Michael’s Ober Hofer further said that eight Swiss Museums have come together under the leadership of Zurich’s Rietberg Museum to investigate the provenance of their holdings in historical
Kingdom of Benin in Nigeria.
